OUZOUD FALLS EXCURSION

Full day

Pick up from your hotel at 8.00am to visit two of the great natural wonders of Southern Morocco. Begin the approx 2.5hr journey, enjoying the views as you travel northeast to the village of Tanaghmeilt in the Atlas Mountains. Driving through desert hills past palm groves and old villages.

Ouzoud are amongst the highest natural waterfalls in North Africa, and the name translates to ‘grinding grain’ in the Berber language. On arrival you take the steps down past the small rustic Berber hotels, simple restaurants and stalls selling tagines on open-air charcoal stoves.

Here we meet your local guide to take a walking tour of about one and a half hours.  Absorb the roar of the cascades as you take photos, see the shimmering rainbows that form in the mists wreathed around the plunging waters. Visit several viewpoints to take photographs and admire the splendour of the waterfalls.  Finally, walk down steps to the base and explore the caves where water mills are used to grind wheat grain into flour.  At this point, there is an opportunity to spend some time swimming, or you can decide to cross the river in one of the small rafts to view the falls from a different aspect.

After your walking tour you have free time to visit the many rustic stalls and craft shops along the river, and if you wish, to have a relaxing lunch served from a cafe overlooking the falls where sometimes you are lucky to spot the local Barbary monkeys.

On our return journey, we will stop at the small walled Berber town of Demnate, then travel onward to Imi n’Ifri, where a naturally formed rock bridge links to an elaborate underground cave system, offering more spectacular photo opportunities, with views of dramatic vistas of the gorge below. Arriving back to your hotel late afternoon/early evening.
