VISIT TO A LOCAL HAMMAM

If you want to experience being a true local, a visit to a local "beldi" (homegrown) hammam is a must. Local hammams can be found in every neighbourhood and a surefire way to spot one is to look at small surrounding buildings around mosques.  You will find one entrance for women and another for men.  You will be shown the different rooms (normally there are 3 and each one is hotter than the previous one), and then shown to a discreet area and steamed and scrubbed until you are squeaky clean.  Granted, this is totally stepping out of your comfort zone, but believe us when we say you will be grateful afterwards.  There are plenty of higher end hammams and spas on offer but there is nothing quite like being cleansed in a local rustic hammam!
